How nice would it be if we are able to pick fresh onions from the ground whenever we need them? Nothing is as good as fresh spring onions for a nice salad. But how can you assure you have fresh onion at hand constantly throughout the year?
Of course, the onion is available year-round in supermarkets, but it is rarely fresh, and what we always doubt is whether the onion is organic and where it comes from? Gardeners grow them simply by planting them the crew in their gardens and greenhouses, but many of us have problems with the available space, domiciles, especially those who live in buildings and other urban areas. Onions can be grown vertically on the windowsill, using a 5-liter canister for water (you can also use smaller cans and bottles). Canister saves space and is also handy for moving in case of need.
Here is the procedure:
1. First you need a canister for planting.
2. Then, it is necessary to remove the neck of the canister and then make holes in the plastic walls of it. You can use scissors, a knife or the heated metal tool to make holes. Make sure the holes are smaller than the volume of the onion bulbs you will put in the bottle and to be sufficiently large so that the bulbs can grow unhindered through them.
3. Then, fill the bottle with layers of onion and soil. Continue to place layers until you reach the top of the canister.
4. Pour water over them.
5. Then stick the neck of the canister that you cut off with scotch tape, so that the walls of the upper part enter the inside of the walls of the lower part of the canister. This is important to prevent it from overflowing during the next watering. AND FINALLY set the canister on your windowsill … And every day you can watch as your onions grow…
At one point you’ll have something like this:
So, the next time you would want to add onions to your salad or dish, all you need is to pick it up from your vertical garden with spring onions.
Two more tips at the end: 1. If you believe that it is necessary to water the onion, then place the canister in a safe place and slowly pour. 2. Do not lift your canister for the handle!
